On September 3, East Haven High School opened for its first day of classes. The $45 million 300,000-square-foot facility is touted as one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the country. Owens, Renz & Lee Property Management has been awarded a three-year, $2.5 million contract by the East Haven Board of Education to provide full facilities management, maintenance and security for the school. The privatization of facility management is expected to save more than $1 million in labor expenses over the contract period.
The state's Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) announced that Connecticut municipalities authorized 871 new housing units in July 1997, a 14-percent increase compared to 764 in July of 1996. Though there was a slight decrease of 1.7 percent from units permitted in June 1997, the year-to-date permits are up 29 percent (5,487) through July 1997 compared to 4,245 through July 1996.
