Evidence of Change
In the early part of this decade, the Judiciary Committee of the General Assembly asked the State's Law Revision Commission to develop a code of evidence from the disorganized myriad of rules then extant in the statutes, Practice Book, case and common laws of the state. Dozens of meetings later, the drafting committee responsible for this complex task (comprising judges, private attorneys and representatives from public law agencies) disseminated 500 copies of the proposed code statewide. The fruits of their labor - some 127 pages' worth - will be the subject of a public hearing on October 7 at Hartford's Legislative Office Building.
Finding The Real Reason
On July 3, a hearing officer of the Commission on Human Rights & Opportunities found that Building Maintenance Corp. (BMC) used every excuse to hide the truth of why they fired Segundo Vigil, a supervisor with more than 20 years of service with the company. Finding that BMC's articulated reasons were merely pretextual, the commission ordered Vigil reinstated with full pay, six-percent annual raises, insurance and pension benefits, and restoration of tenure rights from the date of the unlawful termination.
