State Surgi-Center Goes National
CHICAGO, Ill. - National Surgery Centers Inc. announced that it has finalized its acquisition of Connecticut Surgical Center in Hartford. The multi-specialty center, which performed approximately 2,500 cases in 1996 and has annual revenues of about $4 million, will be the company's first center in the Nutmeg State. National Surgery Centers, the largest independent operator of freestanding ambulatory surgery centers in the country, has a network of 35 outpatient centers in 13 states.
ConnectiCare Medicare Plan Launched
FARMINGTON - ConnectiCare has announced the launch of ConnectiCare 65, a Medicare risk health insurance contract for individuals 65 years or older and certain qualified disabled people. As approved by the Health Care Financing Administration, the program offers benefits provided under Medicare Parts A and B to eligible participants, as well as benefits not covered by Medicare, including prescription drugs, hearing and eye care and routine physical exams. The plan is designed to provide low-cost, high-benefit coverage to people on fixed incomes by eliminating most of the co-payment and deductibles that must be paid with Medicare alone.
HMO Penetration on the Rise
WALLINGFORD - According to data compiled by the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) the state's 16 licensed HMOs more than doubled their enrollments between 1992 and 1996. Nearly 44 percent of Connecticut residents now subscribe to health care plans operated by managed care organizations. With 20.7 percent of the state's HMO membership, BlueCare leads in the battle for market share, followed by Physicians Health Services with 18.6 percent, ConnectiCare with 13.7 percent and M.D. Health Plan with 12 percent. However, the recent acquisition of both PHS and M.D. by California-based Foundation Health Systems (FHS) delivers 30.6 percent of the state's HMO market to FHS.
