Business New Haven
10/23/1995
By: BNH
It's Been Good To Know Ya: Douglas A. Hayward is not going to become a corporate cog. The president of the North Haven-based M.D. Health Plan Inc., the state's second-largest HMO, Hayward resisted the entreaties to stay on following the company's acquisition in March by California-based giant Health Systems International Inc. (HSI). Instead, he plans to do health-care consulting for national clients, including HSI, and presumably counting his proceeds from the sale of the company he built almost from scratch since its 1987 inception. Hayward will be succeeded by Barbara G. Bradow of Portland, who most recently headed utilization and network information for Aetna Health Plans. Before that she was vice president of planning and development at Constitution HealthCare and the former HealthCare Inc. in New Haven.

What's in Store: The East Hartford-based real estate development firm of Beckenstein Enterprises Inc. will develop a 134,000-square-foot shopping center on a 20.7-acre site it purchased last month on South Lambert Road in Orange. The facility will be anchored by a yet-unnamed high-volume retailer, which will occupy about 50,000 square feet at the site. Beckenstein, which build, owns and manages retail, commercial, industrial and residential properties comprising more than three million square feet, currently has 800,000 square feet of retail space under development in New England and mid-Atlantic states.

Against the Wind: While the newspaper trend in Connecticut veers toward closings and consolidations, readers and advertisers in Orange, Bethany and Woodbridge discovered a new print voice earlier this month. Published weekly by the Trumbull-based Hometown Publications, the Amity Observer debuted October 5 as a 20-page broadsheet retailing for 50 cents on newsstands. Other local Hometown weeklies include the Bridgeport News, Valley Observer, Milford Mirror and Stratford Star. The Amity paper will be mailed Thursdays to some 9,000 households in the three communities.

The Good News About Managed Care: For the first time in a decade, the rate of growth for health-plan premiums has actually fallen below the rate of overall inflation and medical inflation, according to a national survey by KMPG Peat Marwick. In its fifth annual survey of health benefits, KMPG found that health premiums increased an average of just 2.1 percent from 1994 to '95, compared with a U.S. inflation rate of 3.2 percent and medical inflation of 4.6 percent over the same period. In New England, premiums increased just 1.1 percent. Those increases compare dramatically with the 4.8 percent rise in 1994 and 8.0 percent in 1993. While the decline reflects the evolution of health care into leaner, meaner managed-care systems, KMPG predicts a modest increase in premium growth rates over the next few years as compensation for expanding medical technology and an aging population. “Health-care delivery and costs continue to be driven by local market conditions, says Steve Maxwell, KMPG's flex and group benefits practice leader for New England. “While California clearly is farthest along the managed-care spectrum, much of New England is catching up fast. The merger activity among New England's HMOs and health-care providers, as well as the entry of for-profit medicine, should continue to keep premium increases down in this region for the next year or two.”
