This issue of Business New Haven is different from every other one we've published since August 1993. On the obvious front, we've tried to present a very broad range of what we hope will be useful resources for you and your business. For us, the continued growth in support we've received for our efforts to provide a quality business publication for southern Connecticut is gratifying. But what makes this issue special to us is not what we're doing, but what we continue to discover about many of you.
In pulling together this assemblage of businesses information, we realized two important things: First, in spite of some difficult and often depressing macroeconomic indicators for our region and the state, there are many positive signs and a growing legion of interesting, successful and innovative companies across the region and throughout Connecticut. Certainly, for us it is the continuing process of learning about the people and businesses of the region that makes what we do worthwhile. Virtually every day we “discover” another company, person or organization that in developing, creating and struggling to improve their business is bettering the business and social environment for us all. It's this business resource more than any other that deserves special note here. It's what business is all about, and it's what maintains our confidence in a better future for area business.
The other powerful lesson for us is in the sheer breadth of quality assistance available to businesses large and small that choose to take advantage of it. There are credible financing programs, public and private, for all types of companies. There is a vast number of organizations, associations and private companies capable of helping firms overcome most any business obstacle. Many of these may be imperfect, but also offer much to recommend them. For example, the Connecticut Economic Resource Center may not have turned around the state's business climate, but it has shined a bright light on the resources available to business, and in doing so has aided thousands of business people.
It doesn't stop there. Programs for family businesses at universities, technical training at community colleges, support for new entrepreneurs from public and private sources are other examples. Scores of seasoned executives helping others to achieve success, a dedicated cadre of small-business lending executives at the SBA and several banks fill out the ranks. Our local electrical utility, United Illuminating, has seen the light and undertaken aggressive economic development efforts. And there is evidence of a growing professionalism and commitment from local and regional chambers of commerce that is building the region's business community from main street on out.
For our part, we are gratified by your acceptance of this publication's efforts to help chronicle your achievements and to present the business people and issues that are most important to you. But, like you, we know we have to do better simply to be able to keep on doing what we do, so we ask again for your help. We ask for your continued support, your input, your ideas, your press releases, news tips, advice, opinions, your letters to the editor. It's your energy that keeps the whole thing going.
