PERSONAL FITNESS

Business New Haven
10/9/1995
By: BNH
If you believe, as did Mark Twain, that golf is “a good walk spoiled”...

If you feel stiff from long hours working at a desk, with your head bent over the phone or staring at a computer screen...

If you know you should do something to relieve tension but are bored by the thought of swimming laps or road-running and are looking for something new and different...

If you were never the athletic type and envy friends who seem to have so much fun at their favorite sport...

Here are some new horizons on personal fitness available locally.

Aquacise

Aquacise is a high-intensity, low-impact aerobic and body-shaping exercise program performed in water to music. Designed for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, it requires no swimming ability. Call 203-375-5844 for information on the program at the Stratford YMCA, or inquire at your local community or private pool club.

Mountain Biking

Some of the best routes for off-road biking are the trails cleared for power lines throughout the rural areas of the state. Call the Cycle Center in Stafford at 203-872-7740 or the New England Mountain Biking Association (NEMBA) in Cambridge, Mass. at 617-776-4686 or Jacquie Phelan, founder of the WOMBATS (the Women's Mountain Bike and Tea Society) at the Craftsbury Sports Center in Craftsbury, Vt. to get started.

Orienteering

Think of orienteering as more focused hiking. Take a map and compass along and use your head as well as your legs. The Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (203-368-9380) can tell you about the schedule of instruction and hikes at the club's permanent orienteering courses at Five Ponds, the White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield and Macedonia State Park in Kent.

Outrigger Canoeing

Looking for something really new? Call Blake Conant at 203-222-6183, and join the Manuiewa Canoe Club, newly formed and sending its first crew to the Molokai-to-Oahu world championship outrigger race this month in Hawaii. Conant will be returning to his native state as a member of the crew.

Polo

Located on Central Avenue in New Haven near the Yale Bowl, the Yale Armory houses not only two Yale student polo teams (women's and men's), but is also home to the Yale Equestrian Club, which offers year-round private and group horseback riding and polo lessons, as well as community polo matches two nights weekly. The public is invited to call Eileen Bartolini at 764-4927.

Rock Climbing

The Prime Climb Rock Climbing Gym in Wallingford offers something for climbers of every ability, from a special course for beginners who want to try the sport but wish to avoid the complications involved with climbing outdoors, to competitions for crag masters. Call 203-265-7880.

Rowing

The New Haven Rowing Club has a brand-new boathouse on the Housatonic River in Oxford. The Latin motto on the club's crest reads “From the rhythm of rowing comes the great spirit of life,” and you can savor that attitude and energy in the atmosphere of the Saturday morning open houses. Call 203-734-0125 for information and directions.

Rugby

The Connecticut Yankees Athletic Club is seeking male and female players for next season. Training sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Bridgeport's Seaside Park, near the field with the band shell. Call 353-4158 or 876-8534.

Sled Skating

Sled skating is winter's hottest new sport, combining movements of in-line skating with skiing and snowboarding. Sled Dogs Mountain is a giant mobile snow-skating demonstration slope now touring the area. To learn about locations of adult beginner and advanced clinics, call 1-800-SKATE ON.

Yogic Flying

Yogic flying, in which the body ascends at the moment of maximum coherence in brain functioning, is one of the manifestations of the union of body, mind and spirit in those who practice advanced transcendental meditation. Call 203-562-7000 in New Haven or 203-483-5180 in Branford to find out about their introductory programs to personal fitness.
