For technology-related companies seeking business advice, from research grants to marketing overseas, Connecticut Innovations Inc. (CII) is a key contact. Backed by state funding, CII makes direct venture investments in high-tech enterprises. The investments are made in Connecticut-based companies and require a payback premium if the firm relocates out of state. CII concentrated on nine high-tech clusters: aerospace, advanced materials (such as precision manufacturing and semiconductor production), biotechnology, energy and environmental systems, medical products and instrumentation, computer applications, marine sciences, applied optics and microelectronics and telecommunications. CII operates an information clearinghouse to match technology-oriented entrepreneurs to a variety of resources. CII's new 1996 Technology Resource Guide will be available in December. Contact 203-563-5351.
The Connecticut Business & Technology Center matches companies with state funding programs, in addition to supplying information on business planning and development. Call 203-786-5035.
The Institute for Industrial & Engineering Technology provides networking, training and operational consulting services. The institute functions as an outreach center for entrepreneurs and manufacturers in need of product development assistance, process enhancement and marketing support. Call 203-827-4478.
High-tech startups seeking financing can join other entrepreneurs from a variety of industries at meetings of the Connecticut Venture Group (CVG), an organization comprised of venture capitalists, private investors, consultants, bankers and fund-seekers. CVG has chapters in Stamford, Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven and holds formal networking sessions during which members and guests make brief presentations. Dues are $300, entitling members to attend ten meetings and receive a monthly newsletter and annual membership directory. Call 203-676-2401.
