Business New Haven
9/11/1995
By:
Francis Carbone
This edition of Business New Haven, the first of our third year of publication, is marked by a number of significant changes.

Chief among them is the change in frequency of publication from monthly to biweekly. That accomplishes a great many important aims, including allowing us to report more newsworthy information in a more timely fashion. We like to think it allows us, and those who advertise in these pages, to speak with a voice that's twice as loud. At the very least, it permits us all to say twice as much.

At a time when increasing media monopolization is reducing the number of viewpoints to which we are exposed, that seems a healthy development.

Additionally, readers will note that a number of sections have been redesigned and expanded. Henceforth, our Databank, in addition to listing real estate, lending and municipal bid information, will offer readers an overview of new products, stock performance by local publicly traded companies, their earnings and dividends, award recipients and even newly registered trade names. All are intended to fulfill our primary publishing objective: to give readers
the most complete package possible of information essential to informed business
management.

As well, with each issue we will take an in-depth look at one area of the business world, be it an industry or a region. And some complete issues will have a single, all-encompassing focus: On October 9, for instance, we'll publish BNH's complete guide to doing business in southern Connecticut. We promise it will be quite a leap ahead of what any periodical has done in the past.

Be there. Aloha.

Lose Some...

Your article on the Special Olympic World Games (“Sport. Spirit. Sparse.” August BNH) missed the point by a wide margin.

For businesses to think only of their own profits is short-sighted for them, and for all of us. The Special Olympics in and of itself is a wonderful event - an opportunity to show the world that these athletes are indeed capable of extraordinary feats, on and off the playing fields, and a chance to show everyone that New Haven is capable of hosting a first-class event.

Let's face it: New Haven projects a terrible image to the outside world. Crime, drugs, high taxes have all contributed to a sense that the city is in serious decline. To be able to host contingents from around the world, with scarcely a hitch, is a feat that can certainly help to reverse that perception.

It is unfortunate that some area businesses feel as though they took a “hit” during the Games. But the good will generated by the event ought to more than make up for any short-term inconvenience to citizens and business people, and will make New Haven a better place in the long run.

However, I did enjoy the photos that you ran of the event.

...And You Win Some

Your cover story on the Special Olympics was right on the mark. Due to media hype over traffic and crowds, it seems the citizenry took a hiatus from these parts during
the games. The result? Businesses, who had looked toward the event as a potential savior, got creamed.

It's sad that such a well-intended undertaking as the World Games had such negative and unintended consequences.

But there may be a lesson here for all of us: Our community's “leadership” may be more careful next time about making extravagant promises about the many benefits of an event they think we should be staging.

If we stick to the facts, we'll all be better off.
