Business New Haven
6/4/1995
By: BNH
Lucky Seventh

I enjoyed your May cover special report on the “Seventh Cluster.” It's true that many people do not realize the impact that many Connecticut marketing companies have outside of the state.

If you do a follow-up piece, you might consider the role of some other area companies such as Mason & Madison and Northeast Graphics.

Incidentally, there was a typo in the spelling of Dick Keiler's name and the name of the firm he founded.

On another subject, I look forward each issue to your excellent feature “From the Archives.”

Editor's note: Mr. Oldham is an astute observer. Our chart information came unedited from Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies 1995, which rendered Keiler as “Keller.”

Purity Supreme

Your story “Sold on Sports” (April BNH) was an interesting examination of New Haven's attempt to create a niche as a minor sports capital in Connecticut.

Unfortunately, the city's experience with its bigger sports ventures - the tennis tournaments and the Special Olympics - mirrors closely the experience of so many U.S. cities so desperate to reverse years or decades of decline that they grasp at the gold ring of big-time sports as a last resort - with taxpayers footing the bill.

If you don't believe this, just ask Al Davis or Robert Irsay, who sleazily broke the hearts of longtime fans in pursuit of sweeter deals elsewhere (and who, in Davis' case, may be about to do it again).

We can only hope for now that the suffering attendance at Major League Baseball games since the strike signals growing disgust at the big-money side of sports and that we can begin to return to the purer ideals
of sport.

You're Pretty
Concise Yourself

I thought the May edition of Business New Haven was very well done.

The articles addressed important and interesting subjects. The language was pointed and concise.

I am delighted that you are here, hopefully alive, and well.

CORRECTION

Due to a reporting error, the May BNH Forum (“Breaking Through Barriers”) incorrectly identified one of our panelists, Lindy Lee Gold, as president of Milford Travel. She is in fact vice president of that firm, as well as vice president of the MTA Travel Group. We regret the flub.
