Building Blocks: The city of New Haven has announced a series of neighborhood meetings designed to begin the process of implementing New Haven's Enterprise Community Strategic Plan. The Elm City is one of 65 municipalities nationwide to earn designation as an Enterprise Community City, which makes it eligible for at least $3 million in seed money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to expand jobs and economic opportunities in distressed neighborhoods. The meetings, to which neighborhood business leaders are invited to share views with residents and city officials, began in late May and continue June 6 (6 p.m.) at the West Hills School, 311 Valley Street; June 13 (7 p.m.) at Timothy Dwight School, 130 Edgewood Avenue; and June 14 (7 p.m.) at Fair Haven Middle School, 164 Grand Avenue.
Getting in Line To Lead: Leadership Greater New Haven, a corporate and community leadership program now in its 11th year, is accepting applications for its class of 1996. The program, which educates and trains management to executive-level professionals from corporate and non-profit organizations, meets one full day monthly for ten months beginning in the fall. Topics covered include New Haven history, economic development cultural assets, crime and safety, education, government and more. Graduates also receive ten continuing education credits from Albertus Magnus College. Application deadline is July 21. Call 785-1997 or 777-6299 to learn more.
Up, Up and Away: The Nutmeg State continues its inexorable climb up the ladder...of highest tax-burden rankings. According to FY 1993 data recently released by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, total state tax collections per-capita for that year reached $2,037, moving Connecticut from fourth to third nationally (trailing only Alaska and Hawaii), compared with a U.S. average of $1,373 (see accompanying chart). The state's least competitive tax by far remains the inheritance tax, ranking the state at the top in both tax collections per capita and collections per $1,000 of personal income. At $75.73 per capita, its death and gift taxes place Connecticut at a whopping 418 percent of the national average.
Under One Roof: Four Bridgeport-area agencies serving the small-business community in technical, marketing, financial and start-up areas have elected to share space on the seventh floor of the former CityTrust building at 955 Main Street in downtown Bridgeport. The Community Economic Development Fund, the Entrepreneurial Center, the Bridgeport Business Outreach Center: Metropolitan Business Association and the Bridgeport Economic Development Corp. unveiled their new digs last month; the purpose of their co-location is to provide one-stop shopping for clients, potential alliances and partnerships with lenders or technical-assistance providers.
Gigs: Darvick Design of New Britain has been named agency of record for the new Sports Haven gaming and entertainment complex at the site of the former Teletrack in New Haven. Darvick is creating all corporate identity materials, as well as all media buys...Information Management Associates Inc. (IMA) of Shelton has entered into an alliance with AT&T Global Information Solutions (GIS) allowing the latter to market the former's EDGE TeleBusiness Software as part of GIS' Call Center environment. The joint sales offering uses IMA's client/server software and AT&T's UNIX, networking and services expertise and Computer Telephone Integration (CTI) enabling technology...Robert F. McHugh, president of the Branford-based Resource Group Inc., has landed a consulting contract with Inc. magazine. McHugh has been hired to conduct some 30 strategic-planning conferences for privately held, owner-managed firms on behalf of the Boston-based small-business monthly.
Bricks for Industry: The first 120 bricks of a walkway connecting downtown New Haven with the harbor have been laid. The project is known as the Vision-Legacy Trail, an offshoot of the Vision for a Greater New Haven project. When finished (by the start of the Special Olympics World Games, it is hoped) the trail will become part of the East Coast Greenway, a multi-use, urban-oriented trail from Boston to Washington, D.C. Locally, the trail will connect the Farmington Canal with New Haven Harbor and Savin Rock in West Haven. To finance this endeavor, organizers have launched a $100,000 Buy a Brick campaign to build and maintain the trail. For a mere $50, you can buy a brick and designate three lines of type for (just anbout) any message you wish.
Nurse, Nurses Everywhere: The New Haven-based Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut (VNA/SCC) will enter a joint enterprise with VNA Health Care to negotiate and service home care managed care contracts statewide. VNA Health Care currently provides home care services from office in greater Hartford and Waterbury. Under the new agreement the two independent entities will form a health care service organization to offer managed care companies a range of home care services for their members.
