Connecticut's most exclusive destinations for some retail therapy over the holidays
If ever there were the perfect time to indulge a loved one (or even yourself) during the season of giving, naturally it would be 1999 - the last such chance you'll get for ten centuries.
'Tis the first holiday season during which online retailing is expected to make a major dent in consumer buying patterns (see story, page 8), and dozens of Web-based retailers in southern Connecticut are hoping to cash in on the e-commerce explosion.
Good for them. We hope they do. But as the century ebbs, we decided to share with our readers what we considered to be the area's 50 best stores, boutiques, salons and restaurants. Fifty fabulous shopping (and buying) experiences you could touch, smell and feel.
To accomplish this, we sent the entire BNH staff scurrying across the Connecticut countryside in search of the crème de la crème. It made for some incongruous vignettes: horn-rimmed economists getting pampered with pedicures at fabulous salons; brown-shoed statisticians angling hopelessly for a table at a posh bistro ("Feefty dollars, monsieur? It is to laugh"); foul-smelling copy editors sampling sensational scents at chi-chi parfumeries.
Most of them made it back alive, though, and the tales they tell on the pages that follow confirms that shopping in Connecticut remains unmatched - if only your know where to look.
