New Mandates for Insurers

HARTFORD - The General Assembly passed a series of new mandated benefits that all health insurers in the state must offer. These benefits took effect on October 1 or upon renewal of a member's contract. These include:
• Hearing aids for children age 12 and under will be covered as durable medical equipment under policies, up to $1,000 per child within a two-year period.
• Colorectal screenings will be covered in accordance with guidelines established by the American Cancer Society.
• One annual mammogram will be covered for women age 40 and older.
• Coverage of pap smears is mandated.
• Psychotropic drugs are covered subject to utilization management, as well as copayment amounts.
