Sandra Klimas has been named director of performance improvement/corporate integrity with VNA Services' senior management team. Previously Klimas was director of clinical services at McLean Visiting Nurses & Community Services. She held various senior management positions at Connecticut Hospice including corporate compliance officer, vice president of clinical operations and administrator and director of home care. A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a master's in public health, she received her BSN from Regent College, University of New York. Klimas was appointed to the courtesy faculty of the Yale School of Nursing in 1997.

Arbonies King Vlock, a Branford architectural firm, has named Leigh Anne Jones project manager. Formerly assistant director for design at the University of Delaware, Jones earned a bachelor's in architecture from Syracuse University.

Herbert S. Newman & Partners Architects in New Haven has named Timothy J. Callahan an associate of the firm. Callahan, who has been with the firm for two years, received his master's in architecture from Syracuse University.

Mary E. Bimonte of Helming & Co. P.C. has earned the designation of Certified Valuation Analyst. Requirements for the CVA designation include being a licensed certified public accountant. Bimonte earned her B.S. degree in business administration from Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.

Mark A. Scarinzi of Orange has joined the certified public accounting form of Levitsky & Berney P.C. in Woodbridge. He is a recent graduate of Quinnipiac University, where he earned an M.S. in accounting.

Sally E. Shaywitz, M.D., professor of pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine, is one of six new members elected to the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council, the major advisory panel of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Shaywitz co-directs the Yale Center for the Study of Learning and Attention. She received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Nancy O'Connor has joined H. Pearce Co., Realtors' Wallingford office as a residential sales associate. Previously she was a teacher in the Hamden and North Haven school districts. O'Connor received her B.S. and M.A. degrees in education from the University of Massachusetts/Lowell.

The University of New Haven has announced the election of three members to the university's Board of Governors. Michael W. Toner, president of the Electric Boat Co., is a 1982 graduate of the University of New Haven's Executive MBA program and was the key presenter at the UNH during National Engineering Week. Laura Reid, president of the Fish Mart, a tropical fish distribution company, is also a UNH alumna. Philip H. Bartels is senior litigation partner with the Greenwich law firm of Holland Kaufman & Bartels. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Cornell and received his law degree from the University of Chicago.

Allison Dodge has been named NEW-CT 3 liaison for U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3). Dodge has been with DeLauro's office for four years. The New Haven group has recently reorganized with three new co-chairs named: Janet Testa, Carolann Slayton and Linda Bergonzi King.

The Community Bank in Bridgeport has named Patrick Lorent vice president of its Small Business Services Group. Lorent previously was a commercial loan officer for FleetBoston Financial Corp. He is immediate past board chairman of The Connecticut Minority Supplier Development Council.

The Bank of Southern Connecticut has named Jorge L. Perez of New Haven vice president of commercial banking and James A. Peters of Cheshire vice president of operations. Perez, a graduate of the University of New Haven, is president of the New Haven Board of Aldermen. Peters is a graduate of Muhlenberg (Pa.) College. Both men will be located at the bank's New Haven headquarters.

Steffi Williams has been named public relations account manager with Mascola, a New Haven-based strategic marketing firm. Williams previously served as marketing director for Rudolf Erdel Platinum in New York and an AVP of corporate and banking relations for DG Bank of New York.

Paul Schatz, chief investment officer of Beneficial Capital Inc. of Woodbridge, has been elected treasurer of the Society of Asset Allocators and Fund Timers Inc. A graduate of the University of Rochester, Schatz has served as chairman, president, vice president and secretary of the organization.

Donna Wade, R.N., CC.I.C. of Hamden has been named director of nursing at Saint Regis Health Center, Saint Raphael's skilled nursing facility. Wade, a nurse at Saint Regis since 1985, will supervise nursing personnel and oversee the quality of care provided to residents. She earned her L.P.N. at Eli Whitney Technical School and her associate's degree in nursing at Quinnipiac University. Wade is past president of the New Haven chapter of Infection Control Nurses of Connecticut and has served on the State Interagency Advisory Committee and the Public Health Code Revision Committee.

Joan A. Steitz, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at the Yale School of Medicine, is the winner of the 2002 Lewis S. Rosentiel Award for Distinguished Work in Basic Medical Research. The award is presented annually to scientists for recent discoveries of particular originality and importance to basic medical research. Steitz was chosen for her work in establishing a subfield of molecular biology concerning small ribonucleoproteins.

Two Yale researchers have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences for distinguished and continued achievements in original research. Jennifer A. Doudna, Henry Ford II Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1994. Anthony Flavell earned his Ph.D. at the University of Hull and following postdoctoral study in the Netherlands and Switzerland was a faculty member at the University of Amsterdam and headed the Laboratory of Gene Structure and Expression at the MRC National Institute of Medical Research, London. He is currently chairman of the Section of Immunobiology and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Yale.
