BRIDGEPORT - The WorkPlace Inc., the Regional Workforce Development Board serving southwestern Connecticut, has turned its attention to the issues affecting low-wage workers in one of the richest region's of the U.S. The group has formed a task force to create model career ladders and provide access to mentoring and education and training through the CTWorks Centers for businesses and job-seekers in Bridgeport, Ansonia and Stamford.
Among adults 25 and older in Fairfield County, 23 percent have only a high-school diploma (while 14 percent lack even that credential). Most welfare-to-work clients in the region qualify for jobs paying less than $10 an hour; they possess few technology skills and have scant opportunities for promotion.
