SEYMOUR - Sporting-goods manufacturer Thule Inc. has run afoul of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), whose Bridgeport office has cited the Silvermine Park company for failure to protect workers against safety and health hazards ranging from unguarded machinery and electrical equipment to deficient respirator and first-aid safeguards. The citation is accompanied by a proposed fine of $41,925.
Sixteen alleged serious violations account for $33,825 in fines. These include moving machine parts not guarded against employee contact; exposed live electrical conductors; no written standard operating procedures for the proper selection and use of respirators; improper storage of compressed gas cylinders; and a blocked exit door.
OSHA defines a serious violation as one likely to result in death or serious physical harm, about which the employer knew, or should have known. Thule had 15 days from the date of the citation to either comply or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission.
