NEW BRITAIN - For the fiscal year ended June 30, the Connecticut Lottery Corp. posted a record $907 million in sales, surpassing the previous record of $870 million set in fiscal 1999.
Lottery officials say the near $37 million increase is due in large part to sales of Powerball tickets last August, when the jackpot rose to a record $295 million. Strong sales for the Classic Lotto product, up 47 percent over the previous year, are also a significant factor in the corporation's balance sheet.
The lottery's FY '02 transfer of $271,509,680 to the state's General Fund is also a record for the corporation, officials say. The previous high occurred in 1999, when a $271.3 million return was achieved.
Sales of lottery tickets in Connecticut began in 1972.
