When interviewing for information technology (IT) positions, it's not just what you know but how well you present yourself that matters to hiring managers. In a recent survey, 88 percent of chief information officers (CIOs) polled said professional appearance is very or somewhat important when evaluating job candidates. Only one in ten technology executives said it was not a critical factor.
The national poll includes responses from more than 1,400 CIOs from a random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. CIOs were asked, How important is a professional image, including attire and personal grooming, when interviewing candidates for IT positions within your department? Forty percent said those factors were very important, while 48 percent identified them as somewhat important.
Just ten percent said appearance was not important at all.
In a competitive market, presenting a professional image is more critical than ever, said Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of RHI Consulting. Lee also noted that, Technology professionals are highly visible within organizations today, frequently providing strategic advice to all levels of management. As a result, businesses seek candidates who dress professionally and are poised, articulate and confident.
