NEW HAVEN - During his decades at the helm of North Haven industrial-scrap dealer Michael Schiavone & Sons Inc., which he sold in 1998, Michael Schiavone amassed a vast collection of fine artworks. Last month, he donated the fruits of his travels to Southern Connecticut State University.
Notes Schiavone, who began collecting art in 1960, of the collection, All of it - more than 200 sculptures, paintings, photographs and mixed-media works - is created from or pertaining to scrap. Schiavone assembled the collection over the course of a career that took me all over the world, he says, including visits to artists and galleries in Europe, Canada, Vietnam and elsewhere.
Some of the work is humorous, he says. Other pieces are extremely thought-provoking. There is a tremendous amount of talent represented here. I wanted it to be enjoyed.
