Around these parts, Bill Silverman was Mr. Logo.
Actually, make that branding architect. That's how Silverman styled his eponymous agency, which created logos for Starter Sportswear, the National Hockey League and the New Haven Ravens.
A picture, they say, is worth 1,000 words. And Silverman, who died in late July at age 66, was proud of his ability to capture the essence of a sports team in a memorable, delightful image - creating a new visual language.
Make no mistake: It's not easy to make your mark in the advertising business based in a tertiary market such as New Haven, Connecticut. But Silverman was proud of his hometown, and the rambling Orange Street Victorian that served as his company's headquarters bubbled with energy and ideas.
An admitted sports nut, Billy Silverman created so many logos in his day that he used to joke that he created the logo for the Ten Commandments. That he was able to work, cheerily, with his wife, Marcy, and daughter Lisa tells you something, too, about the man's constitution. New Haven and Connecticut may not see his like again any time soon.
