Brass City Chamber Announces Baldrige Award

WATERBURY - John Michaels, chairman and CEO of Michaels Enterprises, has been selected as 2002 recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige Community Award presented by the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce for contributions made in the area of economic development.
Michaels will be honored at the annual Malcolm Baldrige Chamber Awards Evening at the Aqua Turf in Southington September 12, at which the chamber also will present its Leadership Award to Jay Carlson of G&R Manufacturing of Naugatuck and its Volunteer Award to Kathy Saska of Wireless Zone of Waterbury.
James Mullen, chair the Chamber's selection committee for the Baldrige Award, said Michaels has distinguished himself through his civic leadership and service to the Waterbury community and has championed [such] key revitalization projects such as the Information Technology Zone and the Brass Mill Center, already established, and the Palace Theater renovation and the relocation of UConn/Waterbury, now underway.
Michaels Enterprises is a private holding company for Michaels Jewelers, which operates 12 retail jewelry stores in Connecticut, Irving Michaels & Co., a jewelry importer and distributor, and Michaels Data Services, a service bureau for independent retail jewelers in the eastern U.S.
