WATERFORD - Megabytes Cyber Café is a fresh, new addition to the typical assortment of chain stores and restaurants found in the Crystal Mall. Karen Sturgeon, a Waterford resident, found a way to blend technology with brewed coffee and cappuccino. The café is set up with six computer stations and a small retail area with tables where visitors can mingle and munch on danishes and pastries. To add to the ambience, Sturgeon enlisted a local artist to paint the ceiling in true cyberspace fashion: it resembles the night sky. Customers can enjoy a cup of coffee, and get a dose of the World Wide Web at only $2 for a 15-minute session. The premium coffee prices are lower than many high-end java joints.
Sturgeon used Smart Start - the state's business registry program to help get her business of the ground. Smart Start is designed to simplify the process for bringing a business into full compliance with Connecticut laws. [Smart Start] saved a lot of time - I would have had to do a lot of research on my own without it, said Sturgeon. Megabytes is Connecticut's only cyber café.
