NEW HAVEN - On August 14, workers represented by Local 457 of the Paper, Allied, Chamical & Energy (PACE) union approved by a 74-10 vote a new five-year contract with Simkins Industries Inc., returning to work the following day. The workers walked off the job July 15 after rejecting a deal that would have reduced double-wage Sunday pay in favor of increased pension contributions. In the agreed-upon contract, workers will keep the overtime wages by pay higher health-insurance premiums. The average hourly wage for the union employees is $14.81, according to published reports.
