DANBURY - A Danbury company has filed one of 36 proposals with the U.S. Energy Department as part of President George W. Bush's Clean Coal Power Initiative. FuelCell Energy is seeking $16 million in federal money to develop a hybrid power plant in Alabama that uses coal in a way that lowers emissions. The project, which involves using both the Connecticut company's fuel-cell technology and gases refined from the coal, would produce 200 megawatts of power for FuelCell Energy's partner in the venture, the Southern Co. The project, which would take about 40 months to complete, would be built with an additional $16 million raised from private sector sources.
Energy Department officials will announce the winning proposal in January. The federal agency has some $330 million in funding to parcel out to applicants. The proposal are the first part of Bush's plan to invest $2 billion over the next decade to help meet the nation's growing demand for electricity while trying to protect the environment.
