Foundation Awards $50K to Amistad

NEW HAVEN - Amistad America Inc. has been awarded a second-year $50,000 grant award from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. The money will be used to fund a permanent traveling educational exhibit that will sail with the schooner Amistad to ports throughout the U.S. and abroad. Funds will also be used to cover a portion of docent costs, printing/duplication, and education staff salaries.
This year, the Amistad logged some 2,500 nautical miles taking her to ports from Martha's Vineyard to Miami. She has received an estimated quarter million visitors of all ages. This exhibit and related educational programs brings to life a significant historical event that occurred in New Haven in the 1800s that still has relevance today.
