The Connecticut Orthopedic Society has named Gary E. Friedlaendar, M.D., chief of Yale-New Haven Hospital's department of orthopedics and chair of the Yale School of Medicine's department of orthopedics and rehabilitation, its Orthopedist of the Year. Friedlaender earned a B.S. from the University of Michigan and was graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School. He served as a resident in orthopedic surgery at Yale and, following active duty as the director of the U.S. Navy's Tissue Bank at the National Medical Research Center, returned to YNHH as an attending physician in orthopedic surgery. He was named chief of the hospital's department of orthopedics and rehabilitation in 1984.
Sister Charles Marie Brantl, O.P., director of Albertus Magnus College's Office of Assessment and International Research, has been elected vice chair of the board of directors of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), a national accrediting agency for collegiate programs in business, accounting, economics and management. She has served as a director since 1998. Brantl receive a bachelor's degree from AMC and a master's and Ph.D. in economics from Fordham University.
David Donnelly of New Haven has been appointed associate dean of Quinnipiac University's School of Communications. He will help administer undergraduate and graduate programs and work with adjunct professors. Donnelly previously served as associate professor of communications at the University of Houston and was director of the International Telecommunications Research Institute. He earned his bachelor's degree in radio, television and film from the University of Maryland, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in mass communication from the University of Massachusetts.
Maria Quintin of North Haven has been named manager of interviewer operations for Quinnipiac University's Polling Institute. Quintin hires interviewers to conduct polls and coordinates interviewer operations. Previously an editor at Wire Journal International in Guilford, she was also a reporter at the Shore Line Times. Quintin received her bachelor's in mass communications and English from QU.
Bruce Eppler has joined Handex Environmental's Monroe office as general manager. Eppler previously worked for the IT Group in Lexington, Ky. and most recently served as managing director for Hinkle-Meyer Environmental Services in Frankfort, Ky. He holds a bachelor's in geology from California State University.
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp has announced the appointment of thee new members to its board of directors: Richard D. Kayne, M.D., Julia Roberts and Mortimer B. Zuckerman. Kayne, a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Yale School of Medicine, has a private practice in endocrinology and internal medicine. Roberts, who received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich, has been an active supporter of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for years. Zuckerman is chairman and editor-in-chief of U.S. News and World Report and chairman and co-publisher of the New York Daily News.
The Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce has announced that Bernie Lynch, its president and CEO, has left the chamber. According to the chamber Lynch, who joined the chamber in 1999, ascribes his departure to family and personal reasons and will considering future professional opportunities. Susan Radocchio, chairman of the chamber's board of directors, says her group will defer a decision on Lynch's successor. IN the meantime, Lynn Tamzkar, vice president, will assume responsibility for managing the chamber's programs and staff, reporting to the board of directors.
Arbonies King Vlock, an architectural offices specializing in planning and design for museums and universities, has named Sam Kirby project manager. He previously worked as associate and designer at the offices of Cesar Pelli and Associates. Kirby, who has written for Architecture Magazine and Perspecta, the journal of the Yale School of Architecture, holds a B.A. and M.A. from Yale University.
Paul E. Knag has joined the New Haven law firm of Murtha Cullina, LLP as a partner. Previously with Cummings & Lockwood, Knag was graduated from the Harvard Law School and then served as law clerk for the Honorable Leonard P. Moore, U.S. Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America for health care and litigation and was the principal author of Aspen Publishing Co.'s health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Treatise.
Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Brokerage Co. has named Victor Nolletti and Steve Witten senior investment associates. Witten is a graduate of Temple University with a B.S. in psychology and did graduate studies in behavioral and environmental psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Nolletti is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College. Witten and Nolletti joined Marcus & Millichap in 1999 when the firm acquired the pair's apartment brokerage business.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has named Alan C. Eckbreth vice president and dean of Rensselaer at Hartford, RPI's Hartford-based graduate center. He most recently directed the UTC Fuel Cells Program at United Technologies Research Center and served as a manager and engineer with UTC for 34 years. Eckbreth holds a bachelor's degree in engineering physics from Lehigh University and a master's degree and doctorate in aerospace and mechanical sciences from Princeton University. He also has master's degree in administrative sciences from Rensselaer at Hartford.
Anthony J. Vallillo, president and chief operating office of the United Illuminating Co., and Joseph Andreana, executive director of the Oxford Economic Development Corp., have been named to lead the 2002-03 Valley United Way community fundraising campaign. Vallillo will serve as honorary chairman and Andreana as general chair. Also, Joy DeMarchis has joined Valley United Way as director of the Volunteer Action Center. She previously served as director of the Inter-Cultural Center and International Student & Scholar Services as Barry University in Florida. DeMarchis has a B.A. in communications from the University of Connecticut and an M.S. in higher education administration and development from Barry University. She replaces Lisa Shappy, who recently left to become executive director of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls.
The National Federation of Press Women recognized the work of three Connecticut writers and Connecticut Press Club members. Nora Raleigh Baskin won first place in the Juvenile Book category for What Every Girl (Except Me) Knows. Jennifer Covino won second place in the Personality Profile category for The Poet Within, an article published in a Connecticut newspaper. Linda Phillips won second place in the Writing for the Web category, for Web content written for corporate or for-profit organization sites.
Calcagni Associates Real Estate has named Karen Charest residential sales agent in the company's North Haven office. Charest previously was district director for U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays (R-4).
