Want to be in the clover, compensation-wise? Get yourself a job in Greenwich, where businesses in 2001 paid the highest average wage in the state: $97,245, up 9.4 percent from the year before, according to the state's Department of Labor (DOL). Runner-up was Stamford, where companies paid an average annual wage of $92,662. Westport, Wilton and Shelton rounded out the top five. The statewide average wage in 2001 was $46,946, which represented a 3.4-percent hike over 2000.
Other superlatives from the DOL's 2001 statistics: The largest resident labor force - 65,817 workers - resided in Stamford, while the smallest (405) lived in Union. Stamford plays host to the largest number of businesses - 5,121 - in 2001. Statewide, the total number of business establishments rose by 0.5 percent to 108,736.
