Debra Pasquale, founding president of the bioscience industry advocacy group Connecticut United for Research Excellence (CURE), will step down after 12 years with the organization by the end of 2002.
Pasquale, 50, of Farmington, said she was planning to scale back her professional activities.
The Yale-trained nurse helped to found the organization to defend the use of animals in bioscientific research.
The group has grown from 30 original members and an annual budget of $250,000 to 110 members and $1.25 million budget. Along the way, its mission expanded to include economic development as well as educational and legislative initiatives.
Its members include Connecticut-based biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical firms, hospitals and medical supply companies as well as colleges and universities.
Under Pasquale's watch, CURE also developed a $3.5 million BioBus, a mobile science laboratory that travels to the state. Pasquale also oversaw the group's recent relocation from Rocky Hill to New Haven.
CURE directors have already formed a search committee to recruit a successor to Pasquale. A list of candidates includes industry professionals both from Connecticut and beyond the state.
