BRANFORD - As the federal government has begun handing out hundreds of millions of dollars in counter-terror grants to cities and towns, much of it for firefighter equipment, independent tests conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), part of the federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), showed that the Spiromatic self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) made by Interspiro Inc., meets a new federal standard for providing respiratory protection to emergency first responders against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) agents.
SCBA units typically include a tank, harness, mask and an airflow regulator that allows users to breathe clean air while exposed to noxious fumes. SCBAs used by firefighters must be NIOSH-approved.
As a result of the successful testing, newly designed labels affixed to the Interspiro Spiromatic will read, CBRN Agent-Approved.
