Workshop seeks Sound solutions to improved waterborne transportation

NEW HAVEN ‹ A community planning workshop to elicit public opinion regarding the Long Island Sound Waterborne Transportation Plan Study will take place October 1 in the Long Wharf Maritime Centers Water Club at 555 Long Wharf Drive. These two-hour workshops will begin at 4:15 p.m., and repeat at 6:45 p.m.

The Waterborne Plan Study, sponsored by the Greater Bridgeport Regional Planning Agency (GBRPA), the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) and the South Western Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA), will explore ways to expand the use of the Long Island Sound for passenger and freight transportation.

The 13-month study began in May to address increasingly congested roadway and transportation networks serving communities adjoining Long Island Sound. It will also examine the potential use of the Long Island Sound to offer increased emergency-response capabilities.

Organizers say that the input and participation of the people who live, work and do business along the Long Island Sound is important to the process. Workshop attendees will consider issues such as local impacts, market development, traffic control and environmental concerns in the evaluation of transportation alternatives.

A 2000-2025 Long Island Sound Waterborne Transportation Plan will be the ultimate product of the project. The plan will address marine facilities, marinas and harbors adjoining the Sound and its tributaries, and will assess the range of potential ferry services and routes, both passenger and freight, that might address congestion and travel needs.

The work will be based on market assessments, an understanding of the ground transportation connections that ferry terminals require, and consideration of the potential impacts of ferry facilities ‹ positive and negative ‹ on their host communities.

Community members who cannot attend the planning workshops may participate in an interactive forum on a Web site being developed for the project.

More information about the workshop or future Waterborne Plan events is available by calling 917-339-0488, e-mailing cryan@hshassoc.com or visiting http://www.nymtc.org/waterborne_plan/index.htm.
