STRATFORD A $1.5 million state-funded project to improve flagging Stratford Center and the towns Metro North train station, slated to begin next spring, should help to attract more people and businesses to the area, town officials hope.
No town money will be used on the project, which is slated to begin in the spring of 2003, Stratford Town Manager Michael Feeney said.
The project includes expanding the railroad stations platform, building a parking garage nearby and beautifying Stratford Center with a median, landscaping and a wider sidewalk.
In addition, the project includes decorative lighting and improved walkways under the I-95 bridge near the railroad station.
Nearly $700,000 of the funds from the states Department of Transportation (DOT) will be used to expand the railroad stations platform. Another $300,000 state transportation grant will fund improvements to the train depot and surrounding area. Metro North is providing $500,000 for upgrades to Stratford Center. Traffic lights on both sides of the railroad trestle will be placed on both sides of Main Street to improve traffic sight lines and make what has been a dangerous intersection safer.
