WETHERSFIELD - Work-related accidents claimed 40 lives in the state in 2001, according to a report released this month by the state Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety & Health. That figure represents a decline of 15 over 2000. Nineteen transportation incidents representing 47.5 percent of the fatalities included 11 highway deaths and four workers struck by vehicles of mobile equipment. Nine other fatalities were the result of falls, six stemmed from violent acts or assaults and three from exposure to harmful substances or environments.
The manufacturing industry was responsible for nine worker fatalities, while construction reported eight deaths and the transportation & public utilities sector accounted for seven.
