HARTFORD - The Connecticut Retail Merchants Association (CRMA) has selected Bernie's its 2002 Retailer of the Year. The chain is New England's largest family-owned audio, video, TV, appliance and bedding retailer, with 11 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island employing 350-plus people.
Bernie Rosenberg opened his first store after World War II when he began selling radios and the newly invented television sets out of his gas station in Hartford. According to the retailer's current president, Bernie Rosenberg's son Milton Rosenberg, the business was based on three values: caring, quality and integrity. Except for a brief period when the business was held by Newmark & Lewis, the Rosenbergs have operated it continuously since 1947. The CRMA has bestowed a Retailer of the Year award annually since 1972.
