Margaret K. Hostetter, M.D. has been named chief of pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and chair of the department at Yale School of Medicine. She is also a professor of microbial pathogenesis at the school of medicine. Hostetter joined the Yale-New Haven Medical Center as a professor of pediatrics in 1998 and as named director of the Yale Child health Research Center as well as section chief for the Department of Immunology. She previously served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School. She graduated from Denison University with a B.A. and received her M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. She was named among the “1,000 Best Doctors in America” by American Health Magazine.

Richard J. Nicholas has been appointed vice president-finance and chief financial officer at the United Illuminating Co. Effective November 1, Nicholas will be responsible for all finance and accounting activities as well as purchasing-related functions for UI. He replaces Gregory E. Sages, who resigned to pursue other opportunities. Nicholas, who has 24 years of experience in the public-utility industry, has since January served as vice president-corporate development and administration for UIL Holdings in addition to his responsibilities as president of UIL's unregulated subsidiaries, United Capital Investments and United Bridgeport Energy. He holds a bachelor's in business administration-finance from Duquesne University and an M.B.A. from the University of New Haven.

Michael Stotts, for three seasons managing director of George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J., will in January become Long Wharf Theatre's managing director. Stotts spent nine seasons as managing director of the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival. He also served as chairman of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, the statewide association of New Jersey's 22 professional theaters, and was active on the board of ArtPride/New Jersey, an interdisciplinary arts advocacy organization. He will join Gordon Edelstein, who was named LWT's artistic director earlier this year.

Michael K. Brooder, CPA, has joined the firm of Simione Macca & Larrow, LLP as an audit manager. Brooder, who has seven years of experience serving closely held businesses with a concentration in the construction industry, earned his B.A. in accounting from Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College in Washington, Pennsylvania. He lives with his wife and daughter in Wallingford.

Liquid Plastics Inc., a Middletown manufacturer of protective membranes and coatings, has named Franklin W. Dippolito Jr. national sales manager. He previously served as national accounts manager for the company. He has 12 years of experience working in the environmental and building industries.

The Village at Kensington Place has appointed Laura Gallo of Meriden director of community relations. Gallo is former deputy mayor of Meriden and city councilwoman and chairwoman of the city's finance committee. Before joining Kensington Village she served as district manager for ADP/Total Source of Orange. Gallo is a graduate of Middlesex Community College.

John W. Rafal, president of John W. Rafal & Associates in Essex, has been named one of America's 45 best financial advisors in the September issue of Registered Rep, a national magazine for the financial service industry. Rafal, No. 27 on the list, was also one of several financial advisors selected for a profile that accompanied the article. John W. Rafal & Associates is a subsidiary of Essex Savings Bank.

James Blake has been named to the newly created position of executive vice president of Southern Connecticut State University. He has served as the university's vice president for finance and administration since 1996. Blake earned a B.S. from Eastern Connecticut State University and his master's degree in public administration from the University of Connecticut.

Frank LaDore has been named director of alumni affairs for Southern Connecticut State University. LaDore began at Southern in 1992 as a graduate intern for the department of residence life. He has also served as residence hall director and assistant bursar. In 2000 he joined the Division of Institutional Advancement as a development assistant in athletics. LaDore holds three degrees from Southern - a B.S in business administration, an M.S. in counseling and an M.B.A.

Michael Carius, M.D., chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Norwalk Hospital, will complete his term as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) at the end of this month. ACEP is a national emergency medicine medical specialty society with nearly 23,000 members.

Ronald J. Cohen of New Haven has been named managing partner of the law firm of Tyler Cooper & Alcorn, LLP. Cohen succeeds Joseph C. Lee, a corporate and public utilities lawyer who has headed Tyler Cooper's management team since 1996. Included in “Best Lawyers in America” in the area of business litigation, Cohen earned a degree in intercultural studies from Hartford's Trinity College and was graduated from the New York University School of Law.

Lori B. Alexander of Wallingford has been named assistant managing partner of Tyler Cooper & Alcorn. Specializing in employment litigation, labor relations and representation and consumer credit litigation, Alexander has practiced with the firm since 1990. She is an officer and Executive Committee member of the New Haven County Bar Association.

Ed Dzitko has joined the community relations and marketing staff of Waterbury Hospital as communications manager. He formerly served as director of public relations and communications at the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce. Before that Dzitko was a senior communications officer in the Corporate Communications Department at People's Bank in Bridgeport. He is also a freelance writer for Red Line Editorial, which provides weekly football reports for NFLHS.com.

Peter M. Glazer, M.D. has been appointed chief of therapeutic radiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Oxford, Glazer earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in genetics from Yale University. He joined the Yale faculty in 1987 after a residency in therapeutic radiology at YNHH. In 1995 he was promoted to associate professor of therapeutic radiology and received a joint appointment in the Department of Genetics. He was named professor of therapeutic radiology in 1999.
