Frank J. Silvestri Jr. of Zeldes, Needle & Cooper in Bridgeport has been selected by his peers for inclusion in the 2003-04 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Silvestri will be listed in the Business Litigation area. He received his J.D. from Yale University. A former law clerk to J. Joseph Smith, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Silvestri is a member of the greater Bridgeport, Connecticut and American bar Associations, the Federal Bar Council and the American Health Lawyers Association.
Adam Mauriello of Hamden has also joined Zeldes, Needle & Cooper as an associate. Prior to joining the firm Mauriello served as a law clerk to Christine S. Vertefeupille, associate justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. A 2001 graduate of the Quinnipiac University School of Law, he earned a B.A. in history from the University of Connecticut.
Thompson Candy Co. of Meriden has named Robert Leighton president. Leighton, who has been with Thompson since 1995, previously served as executive vice president. Founded in 1879, the company is a premium private-label manufacturer of molded and panned chocolates with plants in Meriden and Fairfield, Calif.
U. S. Trust has named Anne D. Hale of Branford senior vice president and senior business development officer. Hale, who has 30 years experience working with high-net-worth clients, joined U. S. Trust in 1996. She previously was senior vice president with Fleet Bank's Private Clients Group in New Haven. She is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor. Hale is a member of both the Connecticut Estate & Tax Planning Council and the Southeastern Connecticut Estate Planning Council.
Aetna announced that R. David Yost, president and chief executive officer of AmerisourceBergen Corp., has been elected to Aetna's board of directors, effective immediately. Yost has headed AmerisourceBergen since it merged with Bergen Brunswig Corp. last year. Previously he was chairman and CEO of AmeriSource Health Corp. Yost has spent 28 years in the pharmaceutical distribution industry in various sales, operation and management positions. Previously he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. A graduate of the Air Force Academy, Yost also earned an MBA from UCLA. He is also a director of AmerisourceBergen Corp.
ThermoSpas Inc., a Wallingford manufacturer and seller of hot tubs, has named Dan Tuttle vice president of aftermarket sales and services. Tuttle previously served as the company's director of customer care.
The National Council of State Tourism Directors recently named Edward Dombroskas, executive director of state Department of Economic & Community Development's (DECD) Office of Tourism, "Tourism Director of the Year." State and U.S. territory tourism directors nominate and elect the colleague they believe most deserving of the award due to their leadership in the tourism industry. Dombroskas was also re-elected chair of the National Council, where he will represent the 50 states and five territories in a board-level position for the Travel Industry Association and will work on developing a three-year strategic plan for the National Council of State Tourism Directors and establishing professional development groups within the National Council. Dombroskas is a 30-year veteran of Connecticut government. He joined DECD 14 years ago as senior operating officer and has served as executive director of the Office of Tourism for the past 11 years.
Herbert M. Allison Jr., the first president and chief executive of AllLearn.org, has resigned effective November 1 to assume the job of chairman, president and chief executive officer of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association and College Retirement Equities Fund, a national pension fund for employees of educational and research institutions.
On October 1 John W. Hogan Jr. became counsel in the Milford law firm of Berchem, Moses & Devlin, PC. A resident of Milford, Hogan started practicing law in New Haven in 1964. From 1968 through October 1 of this year he had his own law firm, most recently Hogan & Rini, P.C., which he formed with Joseph L. Rini. His principal practice areas are business planning and counseling, mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate development and operation, banking, estate planning and non-profit corporations and organizations. Hogan earned his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross and his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He was recently elected president of the Connecticut Bar Association.
Nancy Devine Kyger, for six years director of development of the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, has resigned to begin an independent consulting business. Kyger, who has 25 years of experience in the fund-development field, will continue working with the Foundation until the end of the year. Lynn Andrewsen has been named acting director of development.
Thomas A. Kirk Jr., commissioner of the state's Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Robert Fiondella Jr., partner in Wealth Management Advisors, Lea Goodman, partner in Legacy One Group, and Karen Baldwin, managed care professional, have been named directors of the Foundation for Mental Health. Jaye Donaldson, president of Donaldson Makoski, was elected vice president, while Sue Sucsy was elected secretary. The Foundation for Mental Health is a non-profit organization formed to bridge the gaps in services for people with chronic mental illness.
Liquid Plastics Inc. of Middletown, a manufacturer of specialty coating membranes, has hired Agatha M. Fil as marketing assistant. Fil, who attended Middlesex Community College, will work in customer relationship management.
Three Yale faculty members have been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences: Michael Merson, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and dean and Anna M. R. Lauder Professor of Public Health; Richard Lifton, M.D., professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry and professor of internal medicine, nephrology; and Michele Barry, M.D., professor of medicine and public health as well as director of the Office of International Health.
