BRANFORD - An important link to New Haven's manufacturing heritage was broken November 15 when Paul D. Wingate passed away at age 81. A Chicago native, Wingate moved to the New Haven area following service in World War II and joined the Hamden Steel & Aluminum Corp., eventually becoming its CEO and owner. Wingate was a national president of the Association of Steel Distributors, and was named Steel Distributor of the Year in 1970. He was also a director of the Steel Service Center Institute, and was named a lifetime honorary board member. He was a director of the New Haven Savings Bank, and a member of its executive and trust committees.
Wingate was also a director and part owner of the Long Wharf Steamship Lines, which operated the Liberty Belle cruise ship. In addition he was a vice president and director of Gaylord Hospital, and was later elected an honorary director.
