Nils C. Bergenhem has joined the Institute for Diabetes Discovery, LLC as vice president of research. He will manage the development of small-molecule drugs for the treatment of diabetes, diabetic complications and obesity. Bergenhem previously served as director for diabetes research at OSI Pharmaceuticals, building the diabetes program in New York as well as Oxford, England. He holds a B.S. in chemistry from Linkoping University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Umeaa University, both in Sweden. He has completed postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan in molecular biology and human genetics.

The Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA) has presented Donald T. Studley, CPA with its 2002 Public Service Award. The award is a joint recognition from CSCPA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Studley received the award in recognition of his community service throughout his career as a CPA/managing partner in the Danbury firm of Studley, White & Associates, PC. He earned a B.A. from Holy Cross and an MBA from Dartmouth Collage.

William C. Piper of Meriden, administrator of long-term care and vice president of administration at Masonic Healthcare Center, has been awarded the "One Heart, Many Hands Award" by the American Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (AAHSA). AAHSA launched the award to recognize the contribution its members make to ensure resident safety and comfort. Piper has been with Masonic Healthcare Center for 18 years.

The Gateway Community College Foundation has honored four New Haven-area residents for their community service. Receiving awards were David W. Benfer, president and chief executive officer of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System; Marna P. Borgstrom, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital; Albert Harary, director of special projects for the Alzheimer's Association; and Joyce Holmes, alumna and associate professor at Gateway.

Joanne Walsh of Milford, president and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut, was presented with the Yale University School of Nursing's Excellence in Caring in Chronic Illness Award. Walsh was recently installed as chairwoman of the board of directors for the Connecticut Association for Home Care.

People's Bank has hired Laura Naramore as leader of the Bridgeport-based financial services firm's Strategy Management team. As internal strategic business advisor, Naramore will focus on the dynamics that support the execution of strategy across the organization. Naramore joins People's from Deloitte & Touche, where she was a senior manager in the Strategic Transactions group. Previously, Naramore was with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where her most recent role was manager in the Accelerated Transition practice. Naramore was graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in history and earned a graduate degree in management from Yale University.

People's Bank has also promoted three executives in its Regional Banking division. Vincent Santilli and Sara Longobardi have been promoted to first vice presidents. Kevin Dougherty has been promoted to vice president, customer experience manager. An 18-year veteran of People's Bank, Santilli is responsible for managing the bank's business-development strategy and is responsible for growth initiatives in the bank's greater Fairfield County market. Santilli joined People's in 1984 in the Regional Banking Management Training Program. In 1991, he was promoted to sales vice president. In 1994 he was promoted to vice president and area manager in the Bridgeport region. In 1999, he became the sales and service manager of what was then the Regional and Direct Banking division. Longobardi has worked at the bank for 11 years and is responsible for customer relationship development at all 153 branches. A resident of Orange, Longobardi joined People's in 1991 as audit supervisor and was promoted to vice president in 1993. In 1999, she joined the Regional Banking Division as vice president and manager in the Hartford market region. Most recently, she was in charge of the greater New Haven market. Dougherty, of Trumbull, began working at People's in 1983. He became a branch manager in 1987 and a Stop & Shop group manager in 1996. He was promoted to sales vice president in 1998, and last May was named manager of the Milford market.

Pramod K. Mistry, M.D. Ph.D., a helatologist with a major interest in inherited diseases affecting the liver, has been recruited to Yale-New Haven Hospital to help launch the new National Guacher Disease Treatment Center with Thomas P. Duffy, M.D., professor of internal medicine (hematology) at the Yale School of Medicine. Mistry helped establish centers for Guacher Disease in England and at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. An associate professor in internal medicine (digestive diseases) with a secondary appointment in human genetics at the School of Medicine, he earned his degrees and did medical residency training at the University of London.

Carlton E. Helming, founding principal of Helming & Co., P.C. of Wallingford, has been elected president of the Connecticut chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. A former U.S. Navy aviator, Helming earned a bachelor's degree as a Regent's Scholar from the University of Hartford and has completed selected graduate work at several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Hartford.

Family Services Woodfield has honored attorney Maximino Medina Jr. for his distinguished leadership and commitment to Bridgeport's children and families. He serves on the board of Family Services Woodfield and the Bridgeport Board of Education. Medina is a shareholder at Zeldes, Needle & Copper, where he practices in the areas of bankruptcy, business and commercial litigation.

Milford resident J. Daniel Sagarin, partner at Hurwitz & Sagarin, LLC, was among 23 state business leaders recently honored as a Multiple Sclerosis Corporate Achiever by the Connecticut chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sagarin, the event's top fundraiser, contributed more than $35,000 to benefit local programs and fund MS research.
