NEW HAVEN - The city's Board of Education has entered into a one-year agreement with Sprague to supply more than 500,000 gallons of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel (ULSD) for 251 school buses. Since July, Sprague has been delivering the "clean" diesel fuel, containing 95 percent less sulfur than conventional diesel, to the Middletown Avenue location.
"We made the switch to [ULSD] fuel for the sake of the children and the environment," said Mayor John DeStefano Jr. "We wanted to be one of the first in the state to start providing a healthier means of transportation."
A recent study by researchers from Environment & Human Health Inc. reports that U.S. children breathe school bus engine exhaust about 180 hours a year. In Connecticut, 387,000 students ride to school each day on 6,100 buses. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated that sulfur content in diesel fuel be reduced from 500 to 15 parts per million (ppm) nationwide by 2006.
