Lieutenant Gov. M. Jodi Rell, Hamden Mayor Carl Amento and other officials were present at a November 27 ribbon-cutting for a major plant expansion at Porcelen Ltd. On Hamden's east side.

The company, which manufactures ornamental aluminum fencing and cantilever gates, purchased and invested more than $1 million to rehabilitate the 76,000-square-foot building at 333 Welton Street.

The facility previously housed the Botwinik Factory and the Meyer's Co. rigging operation. The project was completed in about six months.

The state's Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) and the Connecticut Development Authority provided a $2.08 million loan to Porcelen to help purchase and rehab the property.

According to DECD officials, Porcelen is already more than halfway toward its announced goal of creating 100 new jobs over the next three years. The company has hired more than 50 workers since its October 1 opening.

Porcelen will also maintain its 55,000-square-foot facility on Leeder Hill Drive in Hamden.

"The town of Hamden, state of Connecticut, [state] Sen. [Joseph J.] Crisco [D-17] and others helped us to accomplish our company's expansion plans in record time," said Porcelen Ltd. President Robert Goodman. "Their support was critical in enabling our company to invest in its growth, in the tax base of Hamden and in employment in the New Haven region."

Hamden's Economic & Community Development department secured approval of a real property and corporate tax abatement through DECD's Urban Jobs Program. The town also provided infrastructure funding, waived permitting fees and facilitated zoning approvals and environmental assessments.
