Roger L. Johnson has been appointed director of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. Johnson previously was associate director of the Bronx VA Medical Center and before that was associate director of the VA Medical Center in Northampton, Mass. He earned a bachelor's degree from California Lutheran College and a master's in hospital administration from George Washington University. Johnson also received the Greater New York Federal Executive of the Year Award and was nationally recognized for providing 3,000 hours as a VA youth volunteer at the Sheridan (Wyo.) VA Medical Center.

Catherine Lynch Gilliss, dean of the Yale School of Nursing (YSN), has been reappointed to the post for a second five-year term, beginning July 1, 2003. Since 1979 Gilliss has directed graduate nurse practitioner programs. From 1984 to 1998 she was professor and chair of the Department of Family Health Care Nursing at the University of California/San Francisco (UCSF). She holds a B.S.N. from Duke University, a M.S.N. from Catholic University of America and a D.N.Sc. from the University of California at San Francisco. She completed postdoctoral studies in family health at UCSF.

Neurogen Corp. has appointed Charles A. Ritrovato vice president of drug regulatory affairs. Ritrovato was previously senior director and global therapeutic area leader for central nervous system and pain drug candidates for Pfizer Global Research & Development, Worldwide Regulatory Affairs in New London. Ritrovato holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island.

A team from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology & Paleoanthropology in Beijing has named a new species of dinosaur they discovered in honor of Yale professor, Jacques Gauthier, for his groundbreaking work on the evolutionary link between birds and dinosaurs. Gauthier, who came to Yale seven years ago, has appointments in the departments of Geology & Geophysics and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. As curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, Gauthier also oversees a collection of hundreds of thousands of specimens, from prehistoric creatures to modern-day animals.

Litchfield Communications Inc., a semiconductor company, has named former Vitesse Semiconductor executive Raif Onvural chief executive officer and president. Onvural founded Orologic Inc. and then joined Vitesse following its acquisition of Orologic. A native of Turkey, Onvural earned a master's degree from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. in operations research from North Carolina State University.

Greg Eastburn has joined OptiCare Health Systems Inc. as distribution division president. Eastburn will manage OptiCare's buying group and distribution product offerings. The former president of Axiom Laboratories, the California State University/Northridge graduate previously was vice president of field sales for Playtex Products.

Michael Patrick of Shelton has been appointed Web editor and writer at Quinnipiac University. He will be responsible for editing and writing content for the university's Web site. Patrick was previously online editor and writer for National Relocation & Real Estate magazine and a reporter at the Connecticut Post. Patrick holds a bachelor's in media studies from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

Bruce Saulnier, associate professor of computer information systems at the Quinnipiac University School of Business, has been named 2002 Connecticut Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Hubbell Inc. in Orange has announced the appointment of Scott H. Muse as group vice president of Hubbell Lighting and his election by company directors as an officer of the corporation. Muse will have overall responsibility for all operations of Hubbell Lighting. A graduate of Georgia Southern University, Muse joined Hubbell in April with the company's acquisition of the Lighting Corp. of America, which Muse headed.

Shaun Kilfoyle has been named vice president of Baldwin Technology Co. Kilfoyle will be responsible for marketing and strategic planning and will maintain an office at the Shelton facilities. Before rejoining Baldwin in 2001, he was employed by Canner Business Information as vice president and group publisher of its Printing, Packaging & Design Unit.

Scillia, Dowling & Natarelli, LLC announced the hiring of Bill Brighenti of New Britain as senior in the audit department in the Hartford offices. Brighenti will serve clients on major accounting and tax matters with an emphasis on construction business. Brighenti earned a master's degree in accounting from the University of Hartford.

Todd Kaplan has been named chief operating officer for global markets & investment banking for the investment arm of Merrill Lynch. The North Haven native previously served as head of the corporate finance group in Merrill Lynch's investment banking division.

Eric Tashlein has been named to a fourth term as a director of the New Haven Council of the Financial Planning Association of Connecticut. Tashlein is a certified financial planner with Connecticut Capital Management Group in Milford.

Carly Kubelka-Peck joins the marketing firm Mascola as media director. Kubelka-Peck has worked in St. Louis before coming to New Haven. Also, Lauren Kaufman has joined Mascola as an account manager. Kaufman's previously was with a San Antonio-based marketing company.

The Hospital of Saint Raphael's Sharon Weissman, M.D., was honored with a Home Care Partnership award from the Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut for exceptional patient care. Weissman, director of HIV Services at Saint Raphael's Haelen Clinic, is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious disease. She earned her M.D. at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University.

Jeanne Fellows, senior sales manager of the Mystic office of William Raveis Real Estate & Home Services, has been named regional director of Raveis' international division. Continue as sales manager of the Mystic office, she will now also market international properties for the shoreline from Guilford and Madison to Westerly, R.I.

Suzanne Yurko Wall, director of career services at Albertus Magnus College, has received the 2002 Outstanding New Professional Award for Connecticut from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. The award recognizes excellence in counseling professionals who have worked in the student field for three years or less. Wall is a graduate of Russell Sage College and earned a master's degree in counseling from Central Connecticut State University.

Antinozzi Associates of Stratford announces the addition of architect R. Keith Carney. In addition to working with firms in Colorado and Missouri, Carney served as a project manager for the Peace Corps in Tunisia. Carney holds a master's degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis.
