ORANGE - In 2002, the town of Orange managed to sustain economic growth in its retail, commercial and industrial real-estate sectors despite an uncertain economy, town officials say.
2002 was a strong year in terms of new development and productive renovation of existing commercial properties, says Michael Paolini, who chairs the town's Plan & Zoning Commission. The Orange Economic Development Corp. reports that since January 1, 2002, nine new retail businesses totaling 170,000 square feet opened along the Boston Post Road, while new businesses occupied in excess of 75,000 square feet of industrial space at 76 Robinson Boulevard and 11 Cascade Boulevard. Firms such as Bead Industries, Advanced Fibre Communication and Office Depot are recent additions to the town's industrial zone.
Says Paul Grimmer, executive director of the Orange Economic Development Corp., says his group is coordinating plans to extend Edison Road to Marsh Hill Road. This will open up nearly 70 acres for development adjacent to I-95.
According to First Selectman Mitchell Goldblatt, Businesses such as CVS, Bassett Furniture Outlet, Michael's Jewelry Store, Raymour & Flanigan and DSW Shoes are prime examples of the town's ability to draw the attention of major national retailers.
