BRIDGEPORT - A new joint program between Housatonic Community College and Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. will allow minority students access to a professional scientific research experience and ultimately to the four-year college of their choice. The Bridges Program, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), is aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented minority students who seek bachelor'S degrees or higher in the biomedical sciences.
Clarkson, a recipient of the NIH grant, has joined with five community colleges, including Housatonic. HCC is the only college in the Connecticut that offers this program. It's the opportunity of a lifetime, whether you end up as a research scientist or not, says Phyllis J. Gutowski, HCC's director of clinical laboratory technology and site coordinator for the Bridges Program. Minority students who are in a science, math or engineering degree program at Housatonic can apply to the Bridges Program, says Gutowski.
