SEYMOUR - A lawsuit by a former Hudson United Bank (HUB) vice president accuses the bank of firing him while he was volunteering at ground zero in New York in the aftermath of last year's terrorist attacks.
Robert Weber of Seymour filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey-based bank on April 16, claiming HUB let him go in October without just cause. He also claims his superiors at the bank encouraged him to volunteer at the rescue site. Weber started working at the bank's Westport branch in January 2000 as a vice president. His first job review, in January 2001, found Weber competent and exceeding expectations in most areas of responsibility, the suit asserts.
But last September 13, two days after the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, Weber says a bank superior told him his performance was deficient, and put him on probation for 90 days. Shortly after that meeting, Weber left to assist in ground zero operations. Weber claims he wasn't led to believe his absence at the company to volunteer would affect his probationary status or employment.
But on October 9, when he was still assisting in the lower Manhattan cleanup efforts, Weber was fired. He claims the firing was without cause and constitutes a breach of contract. Weber seeks more than $15,000 in damages in the suit, which was filed in Milford Superior Court.
