NEW HAVEN - Saint Raphael's Having an Opportunity to Prepare for Employment (HOPE) Program has received a $9,965 grant from the United Way's Community Response Fund/Bayer CT Kids for Kids Fund. The purpose of HOPE is to help move people who receive Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) from welfare to work.
Saint Raphael's is one of 16 agencies to benefit from the Community Response Fund. The grant money will help cover 2003 expenses, including program coordinator salary, office supplies and educational materials.
The Bayer CT Kids for Kids Fund donates funds raised by Bayer employees to the Community Response Fund. Funding criteria from the Kids for Kids fund included programming that supports children and families. Bayer employees evaluate applications and make funding recommendations.
Started in 1996, the HOPE Program has more than 150 graduates. Nearly 70 percent are employed, more than 30 percent at Saint Raphael's. Participants are men and women with children who may have little or no work experience and/or education, and have subsisted on public assistance for a number of years. Some women cope with histories of substance abuse, mental illness and domestic violence. HOPE provides skill-building workshops, volunteer placements and mentors, and addresses additional barriers that prevent individuals from competing within the job market successfully.
