NEW HAVEN - The Hospital of Saint Raphael (HSR) in December hosted a reception in honor of four physicians who continue to make a strong difference within and beyond Saint Raphael's community.
The hospital's Physician Leadership Recognition Reception recognized neurosurgeon Isaac Goodrich, M.D.; otolaryngologist K.J. Lee, M.D.; psychiatrist Charles Riordan, M.D.; and electro-physiologist and cardiologist Mark Schoenfeld, M.D.
The event was hosted by David Benfer, president and CEO of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System (SRHS), and medical staff president Philip Noto, M.D. Benfer presented a SRHS board resolution to each honoree, recognized for numerous contributions to their professions.
Goodrich, a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, completed a residency in neurosurgery at Yale-New Haven and Hartford hospitals and is an associate clinical professor of neurosurgery at the Yale University School of Medicine. Last May he became president of the Connecticut State Medical Society. He is a former president of the New Haven Medical Association, New Haven County Medical Association and New England Neurosurgical Society. He is a former section chief of Neurosurgery at Saint Raphael's and a past president of the medical staff. Goodrich is also a member of the SRHS Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee.
Lee, a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, completed a residency in surgery at St. Luke's Hospital Center in New York and another in otolaryngology at the Harvard-Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. He is an associate clinical professor at the Yale School of Medicine, section chief of otolaryngology and a past president of the HSR Medical Staff. In September he concluded a one-year term as president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery/Foundation. He is also president-elect of the New Haven County Medical Association. Lee is author of several books, including Essential Otolaryngology, has invented about a dozen medical instruments, including a drill for pituitary surgery, and pioneered new surgical procedures.
Riordan, HSR's vice president for medical affairs, was graduated from Harvard Medical School. He completed a residency in psychiatry at St. Vincent's Hospital & Medical Center in New York and is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. He is a former chair of the Department of Psychiatry and in June completed a one-year term as chairman of the Connecticut Hospital Association board of trustees. He has chaired the Committee on Standards & Surveys for the American Psychiatric Association and was a vice chair on the Professional & Technical Advisory Committee for the Hospital Accreditation Program of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Schoenfeld completed a residency in medicine and three fellowships (cardiology clinical/research, cardiac electrophysiology, and pacemaker) at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is director of Saint Raphael's electrophysiology lab and is a clinical professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. He is president of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology/Heart Rhythm Association.
