NEW HAVEN - The Good News Garage (GNG), a program of Lutheran Social Services, was launched January 17 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Whalley Avenue. The program promotes economic self-sufficiency by providing low-cost transportation to those who need it to get to work. It is administered and funded by Empower New Haven, the state's Department of Social Services and Lutheran Social Services.
Located at 121 Whalley Avenue, the GNG will provide used cars to up to 100 eligible Empowerment Zone residents who have secured jobs at locations that pose transportation obstacles.
GNG cars have been donated to the program by supporters and returned to roadworthy condition. Car donors may receive a tax deduction for their gifts.
Good News Garage programs are also located in Hartford, Sturbridge, Mass., Manchester, N.H., and Burlington, Vt. Individuals interested in donating an automobile to Good News Garage or learning more may call 1-877-GIVE AUTO.
