DERBY - BJ's Wholesale Club appears to be on track for opening later this year following zoning approval for its outlet planned on Division Street. The Derby Planning & Zoning Commission last month gave permission to the wholesale merchant's plan to expand on its original proposal to build a 70,000-square-foot facility near the Ansonia town line.
PZC Chairman Theodore Estwan said everything is now in place for the BJ's to break ground. The only remaining hurdle for the store is to secure a permit from the state Traffic Commission.
Town officials say the new BJ's should help fill the local shopping void created by the recent announcement that the local Kmart store will close.
The Derby store would be the first BJ's Wholesale Club in the lower Naugatuck Valley. The Massachusetts-based company has nearby stores in Fairfield, North Haven and Waterbury.
