NEW HAVEN - SmartPower Connecticut and its collaborating partners, Environment Northeast, Clean Water Fund and the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network, have launched a campaign to have 20 percent of the state's energy supply come from clean, non-polluting renewable sources by 2010.
The campaign kicked off January 29 at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History to encourage support of clean air, healthy communities and energy independence through the use of renewable energy sources and launch a statewide effort to get more renewable energy on the state's power grid.
Said Brian F. Keane, executive director of SmartPower Connecticut: Connecticut's energy supply is far from clean. Residential consumers buying electricity through their local utility may not know that their power is a blend of 29 percent nuclear, 27 percent coal, 16 percent natural gas and four percent oil. Only a small percentage of the state's power now comes from renewable non-polluting sources like solar, wind and water.
These fossil fuels contribute to both an unhealthy environment and to our continued dependence on energy sources from other nations. That's why alternative energy options must be created, promoted and used, Keane added. We want to create understanding, demand for renewable energy, and a shift in the energy marketplace.
The 20% by 2010 campaign is one of several state and regional initiatives across the U.S. to encourage the production and purchase of renewable energy. New York Gov. George Pataki recently pledged to purchase 25 percent of his state's energy from renewable sources within the next eight years.
