NEW HAVEN - The Varick Learning Center - equipped with six computers inside an existing neighborhood community hub, has opened its doors at 246 Dixwell Ave., the location of the Varick Family Life Center, where the learning center is located. The learning center is a collaborative effort between Southern Connecticut State University and Elm City Congregations Organized (ECCO).
One of the first major projects will be a series of mathematics workshops primarily for seventh- and eighth-grade students from the Jackie Robinson Middle School. The pilot program is being designed for about 40 students. Students will learn algebra and how to use graphing calculators. SCSU graduate math students will serve as tutors for the classes, which will be taught by a teacher in the New Haven Public Schools. The computers are being donated by the SBC-SNET Foundation.
