WALLINGFORD - Masonic Healthcare Center served as a site in the National Institutes of Health-supported hypertension clinical trial, ALLHAT, the largest ever conducted. Study results, recently released in New Orleans, revealed that less costly, traditional diuretics work better than newer medicines to treat high blood pressure and prevent some forms of heart disease.
A clinical site for the trial since 1996, was one of only three trial participants in Connecticut. According to Masonic Medical Director Ronald Schwartz, M.D., "This study has widespread practice implications for the treatment of high blood pressure." Masonic specializes in the care of older adults, and its contribution included being able to monitor and provide data on people ages 65 and older.
