TRUMBULL - The Fairfield County Medical Association will lobby for tort reform during the 2003 regular session of the General Assembly. According to the FCMA, the rising cost of medical liability insurance in the state jeopardizes access to health care for patients. Thus the group will support "reasonable" tort reform that caps malpractice awards without compromising accountability.
In recent years, says the group, Connecticut physicians have experienced medical liability premium increases averaging more than 50 percent. Next to salaries, liability premiums now comprise the largest practice expense. Fairfield County OB/GYNs, for instance, pay between $80,000 and $160,000 annually for insurance, the FCMA says.
According to Philip A. Piro, M.D., who chairs the FCMA's Committee on Legislation: "We must ensure access to health care through legislative action. We need meaningful tort reform."
